My Life with Bipolar

Picture
Yes, that is me on the saxophone. I play the saxophone and it has helped me tremendously through my struggle with bipolar disorder. Hi, my name is Derek Yeung and I have bipolar disorder. I am 30 years old at the time of this writing and I am living a full life.

I am not on any disability income. I work for my money by teaching saxophone and working at the community center as a front desk attendant.

My first meeting with bipolar or rather the start of my psychosis started when I was 17 years old. So, I have lived with this disorder for over 13 years. It wasn't easy to get where I am right now. But, if you believe you can be well again, you will. But, you really have to mean it. And believe it. Belief is very powerful.

I always knew, even when I was young that everything would always turn out fine. My psychosis at 17 was triggered by beer. I only had half a can and it was my first time and that was enough to set the wheels turning into my psychosis.

At the time when I was first admitted to the hospital they thought I had Schizophrenia. Then, they thought I had Schizo-Affective disorder. Then, finally the doctor said I must be bipolar because no one with Schizophrenia/Schizo-Affective disorder recovers as well as I have. So, I really don't know what I have, but it doesn't matter. What I do know is that I have a mental disorder and it needs to be managed. I am on medicine and I take it daily.

There was a time that I went off my meds with a family doctor, who should have consulted the psychiatrist but didn't, and then I went into another psychosis.

I am leaving out many small details that occurred here and there, but I am trying to tell YOU that even though you are diagnosed with a disorder YOU can overcome it, as I have.

I am not cured of my disorder as I am sure others say you can be, but I am able to do the things I want and live my life and have friends to talk to and money to spend. How am I able to do this?
